Purpose of the Sled Dog Showcase

The Showcase was started in 2012 by Abby Fallis, who has been involved

in showing dogs since 1995 and completed her first judging assignment

in 2007.

There is a wide-spread feeling among many musher’s that often our

dogs are over-looked and not overly-welcomed in the show ring.

Over the years, this has caused a huge decline in active mushers

entering dog shows ... and now it's rare, to see a “working sled dog”

in the show ring.

Abby designed the showcase as a dog show for working Siberian huskies.

It's a place where mushers could show off their sled dogs to judges who

themselves have many years of experience working with sled dogs.

The idea was to have a 3-judge panel including a sprint musher, a

mid-distance musher, and a distance musher, or, in leu of all 3 racing classes, judges with different pedigrees and bloodlines. Unlike a kennel club show, dogs are evaluated as sled dogs and given an evaluation based on performance, structure, movement, & temperament.

This year's showcase will be held on 25th May 2024 in Cargill, ON.

Our 3 judges for the 2024 showcase are Jennifer Freking, Jim Cunningham & Abby Fallis (showcase founder)

Jim is a marshal for the Siberian Husky club of Canada and In 2014 Jim applied to the IFSS for his race marshal licence and is now 1 of very few people in the world that hold an International Race Marshal License for sled dog races

.

Over the past years Jim has officiated World Championships (both dryland & snow). He`s been all over the world to officiate race Norway, Shedan, Chili, and France to name a few.

Hemlock Bristol 2018.jpg

Abby`s dog-journey began at a very young age.

She was 14 when they got a family dog! Roo, shepherd-lab cross.

Abby went looking for oberdience classes, she found Judy Sauve of  K9 Kollege.  Little did she know that Judy and Roo were preparing the way for a lifetime of working with Northern Breeds, notorious for their independent nature and strong opinions!

Abby was lucky: she found it all, including a mentor who helped turn her shepherd-lab cross into a sled dog.

Her sledding mentor tough her foundation is everything. Together they trained and ran, built her own team of sled dogs.  , worked her dogs. She became a musher!

Her first race, was the Mal Quad Crown, it was only the beginning. Since then Abby has competed across Ontario, Quebec, New York and New Hampshire.  Her dogs have brought home ribbons, trophies, purses and awards. None of this means more than the dogs themselves, They are her pride,  passion, & heart.

Sample score card.jpg

How it works

Scores & Judging

Pending number of entries classes may offer multiple groups ranging from 2-8 ppl

For classes with larger number of dogs like untitled class this makes it possible for owners to show more then 1 dog in the same class. (however be ready with help if you have more then 1 dog called back into the ring for final group selections.

Each dog can only be entered in 1 class, once.

EGs you may not enter your 13month old in puppy and untitled or in Vet and SDX etc.

In the class you will be asked to move your dog in a group and solo around the show ring, judges will physically exam your dog. If your dog does not like to be touched you must warn each judge before they move into the dogs personal space.

Dogs do not need to stack, a dog that does not show-stack will not be disqualified or over looked, but the dog should stand with you (sitting periodically is ok) and should be able to move with you around the ring on a show-lead or small leash and stand for examination. Shy dogs are acceptable.

Each judge will evaluate your dog individual in its class using a score card.

Score are accumulated and top ranked scores that will detriment the dogs that will be selected to represent the best of that group. Best of group can vary in size depending on scores and ties.

These best of group dogs will be called back into the ring once all dogs from the class have been scored for a final evaluation without score cards

Final group placement 1st - 4th  in each class will be awards based on judges agreement.

1st place, the top ranked dog in each regular RNB class will complete at the end of the day for Best In Showcase, & Reserved Best In Showcase.

Other awards

Top 10 - this is to recognize RNB dogs that have a top ten score for the showcase (tie breaks may be required)

Judges Selects & JR Judge Select - this is to allow each judge to award a dog they personally feel is exceptional

at Lunch or after the show you may inquire about your dog with the judges, but will not have access to the detailed score cards as this does not determine your overall placement in your group or the show as a whole.
